Abstract

Truly effective programming exercises that inspire new students of very high-level languages are rare. Many of the better standard pedagogical examples appear to be overly contrived from the novice's point of view. This paper presents a wonderful and timely exercise that helps students understand the subtle inner workings of logic programming systems. Moreover, it was in no way contrived by some collection of Prolog programming zealots. Indeed, it is one of many online puzzles provided by an organization dedicated to strengthening the mathematical skills of school children.
