Hackers are obsessed with computers. At the heart of the obsession is a drive to master the computer. The classic hacker of the early decades of computing was simply a compulsive programmer; the term carried no pejorative connotation (Levy, 1984). It is only since the era of heavily networked computers that the term hacker has become associated with computerized vandalism. Those who seek to preserve and promote the honor of the original meaning call the vandals crackers rather than hackers.
