A large proportion of the scientific calculations performed on computers involves matrices. Partly, this is because of the ubiquity of matrices in the mathematics of scientific problems, but it is also partly due to the fact that the use of matrices is ideally suited to the iterative type of calculation in which computers realize their full power.
