Abstract

A microprocessor is a single-chip integrated circuit (IC) implementation of a general-purpose central processing unit (CPU--q.v.). It contains a controller to direct the execution of program instructions, registers to store control and data values temporarily, and an arithmetic logic unit (ALU--q.v.) to calculate results. A microprocessor chip is a (very) large-scale integrated (LSI or VLSI) circuit fabricated on a sliver of silicon less than 7mm (about 1/4 in) square and 0.5mm (1/50 in) thick, about the size of a baby's fingernail.
