Using visual display methods to examine scientific data and information is a time-honored technique (Tufte, 1983). Electronic or digital scientific visualization is a younger field, 10-20 years old. Scientific visualization applies techniques from the convergent fields of computer animation, computer graphics, image processing, computer vision (q.v.), computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM--q.v.), signal processing, and user interface (q.v.) design studies (MacCormick et al., 1987).
