Abstract

A proposed host mechanism and three-level hierarchical architecture apply concepts of agent-based control to networked traffic and transportation systems. The architecture enables the development of "local simple, remote complex" network-based design for low-cost, high performance traffic systems. It takes into account issues related to field-programmable-and-configurable devices, embedded software platforms, and operation protocols for traffic control.
