Abstract

The ever-increasing growth and complexity of software-intensive systems over the past 20 years and the ensuing rise in geographically distributed projects are trends that are here to stay. Players in the government defense contracting industry are leading the way, blazing a path for other industries to follow. The Systems and Software Consortium, with a membership comprised of most of the largest defense contractors, has a unique view into evolving initiatives both in and between its member companies. Solving the distributed project management problem is a top priority, one that relies not simply on the intelligent application of technology, but also on coordinated, complimentary efforts focused on people and processes. The authors describe an array of drivers, constraints, and enablers that are leading organizations to invest in real-time project management information systems. They describe how these systems must evolve to support increased decision velocity and cohesiveness in today's increasingly distributed world.
