Abstract

The Icon Book by William Horton makes a valuable contribution to what might be called a discipline of technical communication by codifying principles for designing icons and making these principles accessible to designers of ordinary talent. The Icon Book has many features in common with handbooks that are used in engineering disciplines. Its focus on the needs of the practitioner supports the evolution of technical communication from an art to a normative science.
