Abstract

The Bellcore OS — ASSIST™ system provides automated assistance for the analysis of performance statistics reports in Operator Services Centers (OSCs) of the Bell Operating Companies. This system demonstrates the viability of knowledge-based systems technology in the Operator Services arena and illustrates the feasibility of a support tool for the analysis of statistical reports toward performance efficiency diagnosis.1We briefly describe the problem domain, system functionality, and the knowledge-based approach to analysis and diagnosis problems, then focus on the development lifecycle for such systems. We conclude with a review of the ongoing field trial and a summary of future plans for the OS-ASSIST system. A review of the major lessons learned over the course of this and several other Bellcore knowledge-based systems development projects can be obtained from [2].This paper provides an in-depth view of the application of expert systems techniques toward the analysis of performance reports and the diagnosis of potential inefficiencies. This approach can easily be reused in any number of performance analysis and diagnosis domains where performance data is readily available.
