The original vision of the Semantic Web was as a tool for providing servicesfrequently, e-commerce services. A new vision sees the Semantic Web as a knowledge management environment. Such a vision introduces new requirements, such as the ability to semiautomatically learn ontologies and extract metadata. This is necessary both to assist users as they create new knowledge and to deal with the mass of legacy data on the Web. To understand what technologies are necessary to meet these requirements, a look at current Semantic Web technologies is helpful, including ontology languages and tools, practical ontologies, and commercial products that implement taxonomies. Some of the challenges to the knowledge management vision of the Semantic Web involve relating the technology to the nature of knowledge work.This article is part of a special issue on AI, Agents, and the Web.
