Promoting student questioning in science is integral to inquiry-oriented instruction and to conceptual understanding, but it is rare in most science classrooms. This paper describes the development of software for handheld computers that helps teachers capture and use student questions in science classrooms. The paper also analyzes teachers' use of the software to elicit prior knowledge, to engage students in reviewing concepts, and to structure student-led inquiry.
