Developing intelligent information systems has been a focus of recent research. A major component that makes a system intelligent is its learning capabilities. A learning system can adapt itself to new environments and improve its performance with minimum intervention from the developer. In this paper, we review major learning paradigms, examine the role of learning in intelligent information systems, and discuss potential research issues in integrating learning capabilities in information systems design.
