Abstract

A crucial factor for the success or failure of software development projects is the qualification of project managers. But how can future project managers be prepared for their role? To successfully manage a software project, theoretical knowledge is not sufficient. Practical experience is necessary, too. This paper presents a new approach for teaching software project management based on the interactive simulation of software projects. This approach teaches theoretical knowledge on software engineering and project management and also offers students the chance to gather reality-like management experience. One important feature of this approach is to analyse the course and outcomes of the simulated projects to give students feedback on their management strengths and weaknesses.
