Abstract

In recent years a massive trend towards collaboratively created game modifications has appeared and changed the very way the game industry is working. A similar tendency towards user-participation is visible within the Web 2.0 movement, which is considered to be the Internet's next evolutionary step. This paper argues that both trends are caused by the same phenomenon. By bringing the two trends together, the concepts of what could be called Game Development 2.0 will become clear. In consequence, this also allows to interpret its latest occurence as in-world player-centric and collaborative development as an important step towards an upcoming 'Web 3D 2.0'.
