In this paper we present an introduction to the use of quantitative methods in modelling and analysis of biological systems. We begin with a survey of the methods presently in widespread use in computational biology. We then continue to consider how the modelling techniques and tools which have been used successfully in performance evaluation studies of hardware and software systems are now being applied to model functions and processes in living systems.
