Abstract

Environmental sustainability begins at home and technology-enabled feedback on domestic energy consumption can promote awareness and lead to energy savings. However, consumers have had few energy display choices and there's little understanding of the underlying principles of good display design. The authors articulate a set of design concerns around themes of behavior and context, data, device, and engagement. Their studies suggest key issues include providing engaging and understandable data presentation, flexibility in use, device aesthetics, and support for simple awareness information augmented by occasional detailed engagement. These point to a research and design agenda for future work in technology-enabled feedback via smart meters and future displays in sustainable smart homes.
