Abstract

Due to appearance of varied semi-structured databases on Internet and Intranet, knowingly and unknowingly huge amount of Information grow at a fast pace. These databases evolve very quickly; like run time report generated by ERPs, World-Wide Web with its HTML pages, text files, bibliographies, various logs generated etc. Such burgeoning databases have made it difficult to retrieve relevant information in terms of effectiveness and precision. User is often interested in integrating various formats (text, image or structured) that are generally realized as files, and also wants to access them in an integrated fashion. Hence. Effective query result is expected in semi-structured databases. Here the user not only queries the data to find a particular piece of information, but is also keen in knowing better understanding of the query. From our literature survey and experience it is observed that mapping of IR style techniques with semi-structured databases may lead to better retrieval performance. This paper discusses the varied semi-structured databases, their representation, what are the research challenges in terms of data mining, data quality and Keyword based query in this field.
