Abstract

This paper discusses techniques that reduce the complexity and power dissipated by nonlinear operators in a digital signal processing system. In particular, a technique is presented that allows the designer to trade signal quality measured in SNR for power dissipation reduction. Signal quality refers here to the severity of the impact of overflow. The proposed approach is based on the nonlinear operation of saturation, as a means to control overflow. Furthermore, the organization of digital circuits for the computation of powers is discussed.
