Automated negotiation based on software negotiation agents has attracted ever-growing interest within fields such as multi-agent systems, e-commerce, and web services. This paper presents a review framework that examines the key components, dynamics, and evaluation metrics necessitated in the design of an agent's negotiation strategy. Using this guiding framework we provide a review of studies that deal with the design and evaluation of agent negotiation strategies. The review suggests that while several important contributions have been made, there remain a number of important open issues. The paper is concluded with a discussion of opportunities and directions for future research.
