Abstract

This paper describes the experience of including an assignment module, focused on reading, analyzing, and reflecting on a professional computer science book, in a mid-level computer science course at a small, liberal arts school. The assignment required students to self-select and read a book from diverse list of titles. After completing their selected books, students reflected on the topics of the book both orally and in writing. Survey results indicate that students felt the assignment provided them with additional context related to careers and issues facing professional computer scientists.
