Abstract

LEGO® Mindstorms™ Robotic Invention System (RIS)™ is a programmable toy with uses in education. This paper describes the basic features of the RIS. It supplies the reader with URL's (Universal Resource Locator) to the online community of LEGO users. In addition, the paper supplies the reader with a list of freeware and commercial products available for programming the RIS. The primary purpose of the paper is to be a resource for educators considering the use of the RIS in their classes. Hence, the paper includes a section on how educators are currently using the RIS and on how they are being used in computer science classes.
