Abstract

Telecommunications networks are interconnected by routers, and network protocols must find a path to connect them. Each router has a routeing table, which specifies the next node in a route to a specified destination. Routeing tables are defined by the routeing algorithms employed. In this paper, a new software tool with a friendly graphical user interface is introduced. It builds primary routeing tables using a shortest path algorithm. Different optimal search algorithms are used to generate back-up routeing tables. A novel hybrid genetic algorithm combining a heuristic algorithm with a genetic algorithm finds solutions which lead to less congested nodes and links and a better utilisation of network resources.
