Extensible applications extend system behavior but often at the expense of system security. The authors developed their Minimal i386 Software Fault Isolation Tool to protect applications from end-user extensions written in otherwise unsafe languages. They demonstrate how MiSFIT transforms unsafe x86 assembler code into safe code, and they discuss future research possibilites for further improving MiSFIT.
