Abstract

Sound in multimedia, movies, games, virtual reality, and in human-computer interfaces is a growing field that encompasses the disciplines of analog and digital signal processing, physics, speech, music, perception, and computer systems architecture. This article will give a brief overview of sound production and modeling, beginning first by describing sound as a physical phenomenon. Then there will be a brief description of how sound is commonly represented in digital systems. The next section will address the perception of sound, using the mathematical framework of the Fourier Transform. Then there will be a section on methods for sound synthesis. Finally there will be a section on the modeling and perception of sound in spaces (3D audio).
