Abstract

Development, verification and evaluation of the conceptual solution in the microprocessor architecture design are of great importance. The conceptual solution is the foundation for all other stages in the design and therefore must be developed and tested with the greatest care. If the conceptual solution has errors, all further stages will be incorrect and the whole design process will be repeated. This paper describes the usage of the program package ATLAS in the first stages of microprocessor design. Using a concrete example of the special purpose microprocessor development, the methods available in ATLAS will be described. It is shown how different data about the simulated system can be obtained by using ATLAS. These data enable the designer to make decisions about further improvements of the microprocessor model, in order to get a better performance. By using ATLAS these decisions are made easier, faster, and with less probability to make a wrong step.
