The challenge of keeping a museum from belonging in a museum. The rapid progress of technology presents challenges to museums, science centers, and the "edutainment" industry. The need to keep up with technical advances, coupled with the increasing sophistication and expectation of visitors, often strains limited resources. The revolution sparked by the rise of the Internet also fuels the need to innovate and compete at a rapid pace in new areas. These challenges are not unlike those facing many industries today. What would the museum of the future look like? What role would technology play? This article attempts to capture that vision, and describes a facility in the heart of Silicon Valley that is striving to push the boundaries of traditional museums with innovations in the application of control systems, network architecture, and microcomputer technology.
