Abstract

The implementation of computerized workflow systemsto support the collection and dissemination of patientinformation has been an area of focus in healthcare formany years. This multiple case study is an analysis of theimplementation of a commercially available healthcareworkflow system in two hospitals settings. The case studyprotocol uses an analytical framework built upon sixtheoretical propositions identified as having a majorimpact on the implementation of workflow technologies.Findings indicated that organizational support forworkflow as a strategic solution and employing a cross-functionalimplementation team were key factors forsuccess and developing an understanding of the flow ofdata into and through the system, given the complexitiesof work processes, was challenging. Understanding theorganizational impact of workflow, the maturity of theworkflow management system, and the human interactionand participation intrinsic to workflow is also necessary.Greater insight into the applicability and benefits of thetechnology will emerge as workflow is successfullyimplemented in more organizations.
