Abstract

The Center for Empirically Based Software Engineeringhelps improve software development by providingguidelines for selecting development techniques, recommending areas for further research, and supportingsoftware engineering education. A central activity towardachieving this goal has been the running of "eWorkshops"that capture expert knowledge with a minimum of overheadeffort to formulate heuristics on a particular topic. Theresulting heuristics are a useful summary of the currentstate of knowledge in an area based on expert opinion. This paper discusses the results to date of a series ofeWorkshops on software defect reduction. The originaldiscussion items are presented along with an encapsulatedsummary of the expert discussion. The reformulatedheuristics can be useful both to researchers (for pointingout gaps in the current state of the knowledge requiringfurther investigation) and to practitioners (forbenchmarking or setting expectations about developmentpractices). The heuristics will be further refined during aphysical expert workshop at the 2002 Metrics Symposium.
