We investigate catadioptric sensors whose associated projections fromthe viewing sphere to the image plane are area preserving. In theorthographic case, we show that the catoptric component must be asurface of revolution of constant Gaussian curvature. We compare theequi-areal sensors in both the perspective and orthographic cases withother sensors that have been proposed earlier for treating theuniformity-of-resolution problem.
