We introduce and present preliminary results for ahybrid display system combining head-mounted andprojector-based displays. Our work is motivated by asurgical training application, where it is necessary tosimultaneously provide both a high-fidelity view of acentral close-up task (the surgery) and visual awarenessof objects and events in the surrounding environment. Inparticular, for trauma surgeons it would be valuable tolearn to work in an environment that is realistically filledwith both necessary and distracting objects and events. In this paper, we motivate the use of a hybrid displaysystem, discuss previous work, describe a prototype alongwith methods for geometric calibration, and presentresults from a controlled human subject experiment.
