Abstract

In ad-hoc networks, geographical routing protocolsta e advantage of location information so that statelessand efficient routing is feasible. However, such rout-ing protocols are heavily dependent on the existence ofscalable location management services. In this paper,we present a novel scheme to perform scalable locationmanagement. With any location management schemes,a specific node, A, in the networ trusts a small subsetof nodes, namely its location servers, and periodicallyupdates them with its location. Our approach adopts asimilar strategy, but a different and original approachto select such location servers. The main contributionsof the paper are:First, we present a selection algo-rithm used to designate location servers of a node by itsidentifier.Second, we propose a hierarchical addressingmodel for mobile ad-hoc networks, where node locationscould be represented at different accuracy levels.Withthis approach, different location servers may carry loca-tion information of different levels of accuracy and onlya small set of location servers needs to be updated whenthe node moves.Through rigorous theoretical analysis,we are able to show that the control message overheadis bounded under our scheme. Finally, simulation re-sults are presented to demonstrate the performance ofour location management scheme.
