Abstract

With today 's virtual reality systems, it is difficult todirectly and precisely create and modify complex objectsin a virtual reality environment. One of the mostimportant reasons is the absence of a suitable modelrepresentation that can efficiently support solid modellingin a virtual reality environment.A hierarchicallystructured constraint-based data model for solidmodelling in the virtual reality environment is presentedin this paper. The data model integrates a high-levelconstraint-based model for precise object definition, amid-level CSG/Brep hybrid solid model for supportinghierarchical geometry abstractions and object creation, and a low-level polygon model for real-time visualizationand interaction in the virtual reality environment.Constraints are embedded in the solid model and areorganized at different levels to reflect the process of solidmodelling. This data model not only provides preciseobject definition, but also supports real-time visualizationand interaction in the virtual reality environment.
