Abstract

By early 1996, approximately 140 different controlledexperiments had been published in 164 articles in refereedjournals or conference proceedings, which examinedprocesses and outcomes in computer- supported groupdecision making. This paper is a concise overview ofwhat has been studied and how: the systems, independentand intervening variables manipulated or measured, andexperimental procedures employed. A subsequent paperwill examine the dependent variables and findings of theexperiments. The purpose is not only to provide acomprehensive summary of past research, but also tocritically assess what has been studied little orinadequately, in order to inform design choices for futureexperiments.
