Abstract

One type of information technology which has thepotential to support learning is group support system(GSS) technology. This study investigates theopportunities and pitfalls associated with using GSS tosupport discussion in the college classroom. As theprior research in this area is not extensive, this study isexploratory in nature. The primary contribution of thepaper is that it identifies important issues which shouldbe considered by educators who wish to use GSS tosupport classroom discussions. In this study, the use ofGSS improved participation and had favorable impactson selected perception of the discussion experience(e.g., process losses, structure, and classroom climate). However, the use of GSS did not significantly increasethe subjects' perceptions of synergy, quality ofcontributions, or learning. The implications of thebindings for future research are discussed.
