Distributed geographic information systems typicallyhandle large amounts of data; therefore the transmissionand visualisation techniques used need to be scaleable toprovide quick, interactive feedback. In this paper, weintroduce such techniques based on the data hierarchy(levels of detail). Namely, we describe focus-and-contextvisualisation and progressive transmission. The main aimof this paper is to discuss the combination of thesetechniques for different data types and for mixture of thesedata types.
