Abstract

In May 2001, of the Guide to the SoftwareEngineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK)was released in a web format and, inDecember 2001, in book format with theintent to collect comments and possibleimprovements. Up to now, feedback receivedconfirmed the usefulness of the Guide for alldocumented knowledge areas, with theexception of the software constructionknowledge area, for which the content doesnot map easily to industry practices or toactual academic curricula. After analysis of this specific SWEBOKKnowledge Area, some issues wereidentified, such as inconsistencies betweenthe textual descriptions and the visualrepresentations. Furthermore, analysis ofthis chapter using the Vincenti classificationof engineering knowledge types allowed usto identify some additional weaknesses andprovided us with guidance on how thestructure of this chapter could be improved. This paper proposes a revised breakdown oftopics that is more aligned with anengineering perspective.
