Abstract

This paper is the result of a workshop held in Montrealin October 2002 during the Software Technology andPractice Conference (STEP 2002). The purpose of thepaper is to present a preliminary mapping of two relatedbut distinct software engineering body of knowledgeinitiatives, and also a list of proposals to improve them:the Guide to the Software Engineering Body ofKnowledge (SWEBOK) and the Software EngineeringEducation [body of] Knowledge (SEEK). The SWEBOKGuide is aimed at identifying and describing the body ofknowledge of a software engineering professional whohas an undergraduate degree and four years ofexperience. The intended audiences of the SWEBOKGuide include industry, academia and policy-makingorganizations. The SEEK is aimed at delimiting theknowledge that professionals teaching softwareengineering agree is necessary for anyone to obtain anundergraduate degree in this field. The mapping showsthat, though there are no major "school of thought"divergences between the two bodies of knowledge, thereare a number of differences in the details of eachbreakdown in terms of vocabulary, level of detail, decomposition approach and topics encompassed.
