Abstract

A novel method is presented to switch from the current scheme of "best-effort" networks in which the provisioning of customer services may be unfair, to quality-of-service (QoS) based networks in which bandwidth allocation meets the subscriber's service level agreement contracts. Further, the current scheme in which the bandwidth allocation is provisioned on a static basis for each subscriber is enhanced to be flexible and time varying. The new approach enables the service provider to meet the bandwidth needs of each subscriber flexibly, and also enhances the utilization of the infrastructure by predicting the individual and integrated usage of all subscribers. The benefits to the service providers are optimization of the network resources and higher potential revenue due to an increased number of subscribers. In this paper, we narrow our scope to dynamic provisioning of QoS, defined by class of service, to bandwidth allocation in broadband cable access network. The self-provisioning of QoS in managing bandwidth in a cable system is presented in the context of automated service provisioning, service-level management, and policy management.
