The infra-structureless nature of ad hoc networks requiresthe distribution of network functions to all the participatingnodes. The underlying requirement for making operationalthe cooperative paradigm is the supposed good-behaviorof all entities composing and, at the same time, using the system. However, the lack of any centralized authoritythat enforces the overall collaboration motivates apossible tendency of entities toward self-interested behavior. In this paper, we explore the cooperation issues acrosslayers of the protocol stack for a network node. In particular,we perform a per-protocol analysis of cooperativeaspects, and identify the problems potentially affectingeach layer. Afterward, we survey current research approachesto cooperation enforcing, highlighting commonfeatures among different layers' solutions, as well as openissues.
