Rendering geometric models with complex surfacematerials in arbitrary lighting environments is a challengingproblem. In order to relight and render geometriescovered with complex, measured BTFs twoproblems have to be addressed: The memory problemresulting from the large size of the measured BTF dataand the light integration problem resulting from summingup the contributions from all measured light-sources.In this paper we describe how highly efficient BTFcompression methods like Local-PCA and suitablerepresentations of environmental light based onSpherical Harmonics can be combined leading to fastenvironmental lighting for efficiently encoded BTFs.As a side effect the method supports Precomputed RadianceTransfer.
