A network of distributed mobile sensor systems can serve as aids for first responders, functioning along with humans for emergency response. The authors discuss the deployment of such a network for fighting fires. The sensors have the potential to acquire information, localize themselves, and integrate the acquired information to provide an integrative view of a dynamically changing environment to the human operator. Experiments conducted at a burn building with firefighters reveal component technologies that will help realize this vision.
