Abstract

The term virtual reality (VR) can be traced to the work of Jaron Lanier and his co-workers at VPL Research in the late 1980s. It represented Lanier's vision of a new type of computer experience. Another early VR researcher, Steve Bryson, has proposed the following as a standard definition for VR: "The creation of the effect of immersion in a computer-generated three-dimensional environment in which objects have spatial presence." Bryson simplifies this strict definition to mean "things as opposed to pictures of things."
