The purpose and history of user interfaces are briefly recounted. The language model and the implementation model of the user-computer dialogue are examined. User-centered design is discussed, and approaches to design tools are described. Key developments for the 1990s are considered. These include base technologies, 3-D user interfaces, virtual realities, multimedia and hypermedia, groupware, and intelligent agents, i.e., computer-based assistants or guides
