In this paper, we describe formations, a means for the explicit support of groups and group effects in Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs). Being part of a formation affects a participant's experience of a virtual environment. We introduce a framework that defines the components of a formation, including an object of interest, members, non-members and leaders. We describe how formations may be applied, using the concept of Inhabited TV as a basis.
