Abstract

The authors explore the use of background knowledge in the form of ontologies to support indexing and searching collections of photographs. They define an ontology for photo annotations with an emphasis on subject-matter description. The subject-matter description uses a structured annotation format and links to a separate ontology of the subject domain (in this study: photographs of apes). Based on these ontologies, the authors constructed an annotation tool for formulating annotations and as well as searching photos in terms of the ontology. The ontologies are represented in RDF Schema and are constructed using the Protégé-2000 tool. The annotation tool generates the annotation forms automatically from the RDF Schema specification and produces RDF statements for the actual photo annotations. The authors report experiences gained with RDF/RDF Schema and discuss issues related to importing domain vocabularies such as WordNet into the proposed architecture.
