Evaluating the faulty behavior of low-costmicroprocessor-based boards is an increasinglyimportant issue, due to their usage in many safetycritical systems. To address this issue, the paperdescribes a Software-implemented Fault Injectionsystem based on the trace exception mode available inmost microprocessors. The architecture of the completeFault Injection environment is proposed, integratingmodules for generating a fault list, for performing theirinjection and for gathering the results, respectively.Data gathered from some sample benchmarkapplications are presented. The main advantages of theapproach are low cost, good portability, and highefficiency.
