Abstract

We present a system for the automatic generation ofbottom-up visual attention behaviours in virtual humans.Bottom-up attention refers to the way in which theenvironment solicits one's attention without regard totask-level goals. Our framework is based on theinteractions of multiple components: a synthetic visionsystem for perceiving the virtual world, a model ofbottom-up attention for early visual processing ofperceived stimuli, a memory system for the storage ofpreviously sensed data and a gaze controller for thegeneration of resultant behaviours. Our aim is to providea feeling of presence in inhabited virtual environments byendowing agents with the ability to pay attention to theirsurroundings.
