Abstract

Flocking style behaviour is commonplace in nature. Itprovides a number of benefits for groups of creatures onthe move at little cost. Unmanned Air Vehicles arebecoming increasingly popular for a variety ofapplications and are often used in groups. Manuallycontrolling many UAVs at high densities can be difficult. The simple, efficient and safe nature of flocking as anautomated flight control method, potentially make it anideal solution for manoeuvring groups of UAVs. Thispaper investigates the implementation of a real-timegraphical simulation of flocking UAVs. Of particularinterest is simulating simplified realistic aircraftdynamics in real-time and allowing flocking ruleparameters and weightings to be interactively adjusted inorder to investigate the effects they have on flockingbehaviour. The paper describes work carried out for anMSc. research project, which is now being utilised for theauthors Ph.D research.
