The authors explore the relevance of an information-processingperspective to collaboration. Based on theinformation management cycle and inspired by themechanics of collaboration, their model suggests thatcollaboration implies two types of informationalactivities: taskwork-related and teamwork-related. Theypresent competitive intelligence as an example ofcollaborative projects, and CI taskwork informationalmechanics, translated into criteria, to evaluate CIsoftware. These criteria reveal the value-addedprocesses that must be incorporated in a tool totransform information into intelligence. To assess thecollaborative utility of CI tools, the paper suggests anumber of teamwork informational mechanics that couldbe used to define another level of evaluation criteria.
