Abstract

Pervasive computing calls for suitable middleware andprogramming models to deal with large softwaresystems dived in dynamic mobile network environments. Here we present the programming model of TOTA("Tuples On The Air"), a novel middleware forsupporting adaptive context-aware activities inpervasive computing scenarios. The key idea in TOTAis to rely on spatially distributed tuples, propagatedacross a network on the basis of application-specificrules, for both representing contextual information andsupporting uncoupled interactions between applicationcomponents. As shown with the help of a case studyscenario, TOTA promotes a simple programming modeland can effectively facilitate access to distributedinformation, navigation in complex networks, andachievement of complex coordination tasks in a fullydistributed and adaptive way.
